Pradumn, Saie, Utkarsha, and Abhimanyu selected The Land Silk Route as the focus of their visual storytelling project, aiming to narrate its rich history and cultural significance through a compelling narrative. The Land Silk Route, often romanticized as the Silk Road, was never a single path nor solely about silk. Instead, it was a vast network of trade routes that connected East and West for over 1,500 years, from the Han dynasty of China to the rise of maritime trade in the 17th century.
Spanning deserts, mountains, and cities like Samarkand and Kashgar, it facilitated the exchange of not just luxury goods such as silk, spices, porcelain but also religions, ideas, and technologies. This dynamic conduit of commerce and culture saw empires rise and fall, from the Han and Mongols to the Byzantines and Ottomans. Yet, its legacy endures in today’s global trade systems and China’s modern Belt and Road Initiative, reflecting how this ancient route shaped human history through connection, innovation, and resilience.
