Title: Framework for designing Audio - Video Interfaces for semi-literate population Supervisor: Prof Anirudha Joshi Use of non-textual interfaces has long been emphasized for people in the developing regions of the world. These interfaces are seen as possible mechanisms of delivering information to people with limited abilities to read and write. Audio interfaces viz. Interactive Voice Response Systems (IVRS) were amongst the first to realize this imagination of non-textual interfaces. Instances of IVRS use are well distributed, but are not limited simply to automated query systems. There is a growing awareness to use IVRS applications in healthcare and agriculture support. However at the same time we often come across studies reporting shortcomings and challenges of audio interfaces. The imagination then expands to include video modality to work in tandem with audio interfaces. It is here that the focus of the current study lies. We are interested in locating pointers which could help one in constituting a framework to design Audio-Video interfaces for people in the developing regions. Our initial experimentation circled around the themes of application architecture and information comprehension [by users]. Going forward we would like to explore the questions related with forms of literacy and their connection with the user-base, questions of information processing and representation and questions to application architecture. |
