The "National Salt Satyagraha Memorial" (NSSM) - a project proposed by the Ministry of Culture, Government of India - was inaugurated by the Honorable Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi on 30th January 2019 at Dandi, Gujarat. Due to the engineering excellence and design capability of faculty of IITB, the ministry has chosen IITB as the design and coordination agency for the memorial. The design of the NSSM has artistic and technological aspects included in the statues of the 81 marchers, the 24 narrative murals, the main statue of Mahatma Gandhi, the Artificial Lake, the Solar Trees and a salt-making activity for visitors.
Professor Kirti Trivedi from IDC, IIT Bombay had first begun working on the memorial, acting as the Principal Investigator. After Professor Trivedi's retirement, this title was conferred upon Professor B.K. Chakravarthy who was then succeeded by Professor Raja Mohanty. The Professors put in their years of research and experience to work on the various art components of the monument to conceive and build a monument of National Importance.
Professors Raja Mohanty and B. K. Chakravarthy from the IDC School of Design worked and coordinated on the various art components right from the sculptures of the marchers to narrative murals, the A-shaped pillar and the Glass Cube.
The implementation of the NSSM was entrusted to the Central Public Works Department (CPWD) and the office of the CPWD has played a vital role in this regard.

Window-mounted Solar Cooker
We are delighted to announce that Window-mounted Solar Cooker project by our former student, Avinash Prabhune, has won the Gandhian Young Technological Innovation (GYTI) Award/Appreciation 2018. The award function was held at Rashtrapati Bhavan on 19th March 2018, where Dr. R.A. Malshekar, Chairperson of the Research Advisory Committee, SRISTI and NIF felicitated the awardees in the presence of the Hon'ble President Shri Ram Nath Kovind.
Avinash Prabhune started work on the project as his final M.Des thesis project under the guidance of Prof. B K Chakravarthy. User study of solar cookers revealed that the main constraint that restricted the usage of solar cookers was the sheer inconvenience of taking it outdoors to cook. The window-mounted solar cooker enables the user to install the solar cooker in the window and conveniently operate from within the home. It can be mounted on any south facing window and the temperature raises to 120 degree in 20 minutes during mid-day due to its novel transparent double wall, high-tech materials and its multiple coatings.

Vein Detector
We are delighted to announce that Vein Detector project by our former student, Trivikram A., haswon the Gandhian Young Technological Innovation (GYTI) Award/Appreciation 2018.
Trivikram A. began this project in an elective course on collaborative innovation and thereafter took it up as a Design Research Seminar under the guidance of Prof. Girish Dalvi. He went on to work on it as a thesis project during which Prof. Purba Joshi was his guide and Prof. B.K. Chakravarthy was his co-guide. Prof. Chakravarthy furthered this work under the aegis of the design innovation center along with Avinash Prabhune to take the concept to pilot production for wider user testing and transfer to industry for commercialization.
Puncturing the vein to draw blood or insert an IV needle is often a painful medical procedure for many who visit the hospital or a blood bank. If the vein is not easily detected, the patient or blood donor has to put up with being repeatedly poked with a needle. The Vein Detector is a low-cost device meant to ease this procedure for both nurses and patients or blood donors. Its main features are its ergonomic design, its aesthetic appearance and its efficacy of use under varying light conditions.

The logo for 'HY-FI', Hyderabad's free WI-FI project is designed by our alumnus, G. Shashidhar Reddy, Visual Communication, 2009 Batch.
In a step towards developing Hyderabad into smart city, Telangana Government has launched 'HY-FI', Hyderabad city WIFI project, the first ever free internet service in the country. The identity is a combination of uppercase 'H' with 'WIFI' symbol. Uppercase 'H' has been effectively used to metaphorically represent Charminar, noted monument of Hyderabad. The cropped outer circle balances the overall form and illustrates the public places at which these services are available. To attract attention 'red' colour was used for ' 'WIFI' symbol and blue for uppercase 'H' to symbolise fidelity. The typeface Univers LT Std, 45 Light is used for its slenderness and unambiguous dissemination of message.

On concluding day of the historic 1930 Salt Satyagraha March, Team National Salt Satyagraha Memorial (NSSM) Project announced the launch of its official website: www.dandimemorial.in showcasing the various aspects of the project in great detail. The design team took a completely different approach to website designing considering the nature of the project and its sanctity. All efforts were made to ensure that Memorial website serves its purpose of communicating with its visitors in the most effective manner - providing the most authentic information. The team has maintained the appearance simple with minimal design elements and limited usage of colours - mainly Dusty Brown representing the dusty roads the Marchers had to cover in their historic march in 1930.

Please visit the website: www.dandimemorial.in and email us your comments on the content, missing links and information at info@dandimemorial.in so that we improve the site by making necessary changes. A good website is the one that evolves over a period of time.

Team National Salt Satyagraha Memorial (NSSM) Project thank each one of you for supporting the initiative, endorsed by the Ministry of Culture, Government of India and advised by a High Level Dandi Memorial Committee (HLDMC) with IIT Bombay as a Design Coordination Agency.

20th June 2016, Day 2 of Design Degree Show 2016
The fascinating topics covered by our Guest speakers are always a big draw at the design and degree show. This year it was Ajay Sharma (Assistant General Manager, Tata Motors), Poornima Phaltankar (cofounder, popup technologies), Vijaybahu Joshi (Assistant Vice President, Jio Infocomm), Noopur Datye (Ek Type) and Deepa Balsaver (illustrator, story teller) who held us in thrall. Our own Proffessors Prof. Jayesh Pillai and Prof. B.K Chakravarthy were also among the speakers for the day.
But the most awaited event was the award ceremony. Charting new depths was Industrial design Winner Sanket Pai's Laproscopic Device Design - that eases surgeon's discomfort while conducting this lengthy procedure. Riding to victory from Mobility design, was Nikhil KS, with his Bamboo Bicycle Design for children. From Interaction Design, it was Prasad B who hit the right keys. His predictive text input method for Swarachakra, has eased marathi text input for the over 10 lakh users who have downloaded this popular application. Visual Communication student Nilmani Kumar made Reel impact. His Movie, ''Taleeem'', studied weaver communities and education in Jharkhand while insight-fully exploring education's real meaning. Animation design's Ronney Devassia hit gold with his Kaakkapponnu. The movie retells an old Jataka tale in the context of Kerala. Steered by Prof. Lance Rake - The Bamboo Bike Workshop - allowed 10 students to create all new bamboo bicycles from old metal ones. Centred around our Bamboo Studio, the student's work systematically invaded all our other labs. The metal Studio had them dismantling and cutting  up their old frames. While the plastic and metal studios's long tables hosted the final assemblies. The frames were then coloured in our Paint Studio. All this would have been impossible without the help of Prof. Chakravarthy. The Workshop, apart from being a whole lot of fun, allowed the students to explore and manipulate Bamboo's versatility and strength, while getting familiar with the many tools and processes that could be used on it.
